The pattern for this design is a collage of the background gradients from more than 50 websites. These are the small images that sit in the body tag behind the central scrolling columns of unicorns, Youtubes and cats and repeat horizontally until they fill the width of the browser window. Over time the background image has become more refined, shifting from the early rough textures and garish psychedelia to a smoother gradient, creating the impression of an ever more polished and precious surface along the way. Background images are a surface decoration and a rare example of an ornament on the internet.Artist

Paul Flannery is an artist who works both online and off and makes things that might loosely be called drawings. Sometimes they are animated gifs, sometimes they are jpg’s and sometimes they are with a pencil. He graduated from Goldsmith’s College with an MA in fine art and has shown in the UK, Europe and beyond. He lives in London and is trying to write a book cataloguing and categorising the grammar of intenet ornament.
